February school vacation week, the Maine State Museum in Augusta offers
activities for the whole family to enjoy. These opportunities for
hands-on exploration and family fun are suitable for all ages and are free with
the price of museum admission.
Tuesday, February 18
The Story of Claws: The Maine Lobster -Learn about the early history
the
lobster industry, the techniques and economic significance of lobstering
in
Maine today, and take a closer look at the lobster's anatomy and life

Life in a Tide Pool- Join museum educators in examining some of the
inhabitants of a tidal pool using
preserved specimens and the coastal scene
of the museum’s Back to Nature
exhibit.

Wednesday, February 19
Green Eggs and Sand: Horseshoe Crabs- A presentation by
Coast
Encounters.
Live specimens will be on display to closely observe these
prehistoric
“helmets of the sea”.

Friday, February 21
Fish Printing Activity-Before cameras, fishermen often
recorded large or
unusual sea life by making inky prints
of their catch. Try your hand at making
these
beautiful, scientifically accurate prints without having to catch real fish.

The Maine State Museum
is open Tuesday through Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm, closed Sunday and
Monday. Admission is $2 for adults; $1 for senior adults over age 62 and
children 6-18 years of age; children under 6 free. Maximum charge for
