Go Behind the Scenes once again
Tour Rockport Marine Design & Restoration
     Friday afternoon, Sept 26, 1 to 2:30pm

On Friday, Sept. 26, Maine Maritime Museum takes you behind the scenes at Rockport Marine, where they've mastered class yacht restoration. The process begins with 3D laser measurement of the vessel to quantify the degree to which the vessel differs from her original condition.  Invariably designers incorporate reconfigured accommodations, modern electrical/mechanical systems and improvements to vessel performance into the restorations while maintaining the heart and aesthetics of the original.  Rockport Marine restorations demand curiosity, diligence and willingness to pursue the last degree of detail.  Members $15; nonmembers $20

Go Behind the Scenes one last time this year
     Tour John's Bay Boat Company
     Saturday afternoon, Oct. 4, 1 to 2:30pm

On Saturday, Oct. 4, join MMM in a tour of a small, traditional boat shop located in mid-coast Maine that builds custom plank on frame boats for both work and pleasure, John's Bay Boat Company. Owner Peter Kass believes in building using traditional methods. He designs all of the boats he builds starting with a half  model he carves by hand. He then takes the lines from the model to create a table of offsets from which he then lofts the keel, stern (transom) and temporary molds, which become the framework around which the boat is built. Builder becomes artist as the vessel's shape is formed by eye and by feel. Along with the ability to be customized and the rugged practicality of a wooden boat, these are also some of the most beautiful boats on the water, real head-turners.  Members $15; nonmembers $20
